I got our before work this morning and had a look at end of north wall pre dawn. Stacks of likely looking bait which i threw a few plastics and slugs at but had to decide persist there for possible day break action or try the macks…macks won.
Started with a troll at the bait reef but was pretty quiet so headed to 18f east. Did a few laps trolling with not much happening but some good bait shows.
About 6.30 I spotted some small tuna busting up so a few casts with a slug in the vicinity and landed a mid 70’s spotty. Tried that some more then another troll as a few boats trolling started landing spotty’s. Whilst trolling I noticed a likely looking ripple so hit it with a slug and instantly hooked another spotty. Hooked and dropped another spotty on slug then had to high tail for work about 7.15, a few boats were into them then. Gordo
Hi Gordo, did the same troll on the bait reef for nothing then moved a bit wider also .picked up two spottys a Mack and got bitten off once. Almost a full degree warmer between the bait reef and the 18’s.what size leader are you using? Lost two rapalas in the last two sessions ( ouch )
Thanks Peter, bait reef is just south east of seaway, cant miss it always a few boats there, a start is 27.57.004 153.26.950 but is a pretty wide area. I was trolling a variety of the usual halco’s….but got mine by pulling up and casting slugs whenever i saw some action.
Gday Gretsch, yes was a bit of action around there. For the slugs I had 40lb flourocarbon but no bite offs this time for me. For the troll i had 37lb wire as yes it hurts to lose those lures esp. the rapalas, but didnt get a touch trolling…perhaps the wire.
Cheers for the report. Some nice spotties .
I braved the conditions and hit mermaid on Saturday.
Only landed the 1 spotty from mermaid. No much action at all,
Just our luck, goes off all week then the weather turns crazy and the mackerel aren’t feeding.
Although saw some small tuna busting up near mermaid but couldn’t pull any mackerel from it.
Headed back to seaway about 10am and landed 5 jewies, 3 under 60cm and 2 over 75cm.
Nice to hear I wasn’t the only one crazy enough to head out on Saturday morning.
Stubbled across a big school of spotties about 500m north east of the Seaway. We trolled metals through them and picked up 6 in the 70-80cm mark. The wind was definately up abd the boat took on a fair bit of water.
Headed back into the broadwater at about 9:30 and chased kingies around the canyon. Not a bad session considering the forecast.
I was out fishing the south wall and the pipe for Jewies and come up with a fat zero. I was fishing with plastics trying to keep out of the wind as my tinny is pretty small. Cound not find and livies at my regular spots. Very frustrating.
Did you fish the north side or pipe for you jewies with livies?
Yeah, thanks mate for the welcome.
Having a small tinny and not been able to get the yakka’s on the rougher days is annonying. I keen watering it hoping it will grow one day. ha ha
Glad to see you got a few over the 75 for your efforts anyway.
