Finally cracked my first Seaway Kingy

We left home at 11pm on Tuesday night hoping to catch some live baits.
Headed up to the sundale bridge & first cat on my cast net I got about 15 Herring.
Most were very small, then cast after cast nothing lol.
Moved around and still nothing.
I had my mate casting plastics at the pylons & he caught one Pike.
At dawn we headed to the seaway & tried jigging the pipe & chucking metals around the north wall for zip.
Seen Alan out there & said there were kings on the bottom, We drifted herring around for a while for zero.
My mate got to tied & I dropped him back at the ramp around 7am.
Headed straight back over to where we were & deployed the only Pike on board, within seconds it was engulfed by a 84cm Kingy.
Then no more Pike no more fish.
Back to the boat ramp to go home.
I backed the trailer down & went out to get the boat & I seen a massive school of Bream right at the back of the boat trailer, was really surprised to see so many bream & big too. Looked at my cast net & thought I’m to tied lol.

Now I know a few here only like catch n release, but I ate it as Kingy is one of my favorite fish to eat,

All I need now is to learn how to catch Pike consistently

I know Craig like the weed beds to the north on wave break but my fav spot is the leeward side of the pilons on a run in tide.

That didn’t take long, very nice. Should be heaps of pike around the weedbeds by now, unless someone has used a bait net on them.

Well I hooked another & got smoked on Sunday.
But that was my first & last Sunday I’ll fish in a long time.
Like a bloody washing machine out there,
The live bait grounds out the front had about 25 boats all crawling around to get a handful of livies lol.
Seen a huge school of tinny Pike about 1km nth of the Seaway.

Those pike showed up same time last year. The froggies should be around in numbers now as well.

Ok 1 more question about Pike.
When trolling for them do you just tow the lure behind the boat or as someone told me you need to jig the lure while trolling it.
And what speed are you trolling these lures ???

Just troll it, slow as you can{motor in gear idling) you can even stick the rod in a rod holder. Best place to try it is the most western yellow beacon(weedbeds just to the north of it) just north of wavebreak. Troll 100m west, north and east of it on a run-in tide and if the pike are there you should have one in the boat within 10 mins. Run-out tide they are alot harder to catch.

Nice one Sean, shows how good the pike are. The weathers been so shite any decent weekend is crazy out there.

I tried a few weeks ago around the north wall wash early for tailor but was quiet. Also had tried for jewies at north wall with live yakkas but nil. Anchored at the pipeline missed one take and got a decent flathead on another. Think the froggies as Craig said plus some SE’ers will help…bloody northerlies this weekend!

I see there’s a spit / wavebreak rally on Sun 7th at 11am Broadwater Parklands…will be there for sure against this madness.

Well Tuesday is looking like a cracker of a day both weather & tide wise.
Do you catch these pike trolling over the weed beds in the dark, or need to wait till dawn first?.
Where would the best place be to catch pike at night before hitting the seaway up

No, you won’t catch them at night over the weedbeds, has to be from sunup onwards. While it’s still dark, try trolling and casting around lighted bridges and marina’s. Marina mirage can hold some good schools of them at night. The jetty at broadwater parklands can be good at night too.

Hey guys,
Thursday schools of 60cm fish were very bold investigating my boat and picking of fish hiding in the long lines of jellyfish for shelter (sth wall tip).

I tested my entire lure box on them to no avail but 5″ ‘camo’ jerkshads almost guarantee a hit. 7″ shads worked aggressively pick up the 1m+ specimens.

Thats my two cents because I find live bait slows me down 🙂

I chucked plastics around for an hour on Tuesday & hooked up once & got smoked on 15pld gear,
Then chucked plastics for another hour for zip.
Went over near wave break and trolled for Pike, Finally got a good sized one & took it back out into the Seaway
Dropped the Pike down & it lasted all of 1 minute before it was engulfed by a 90cm Kingy, Went back and trolled & trolled for zero pike, so called it a day.
Think I will be booking in a guide just to teach me how catch bloody pike lol.

Found Herring pretty useless in more ways than one.
They die so easy, Nothing really wants to eat them either lol.

Looks like the kings are on. I haven’t fished the seaway much since i got my new boat but i think i will go out tomorrow early and get some livies. Is anyone else heading out?

Nice ones fellas! I was hoping to get out this wknd but mrs / kiddies have booked it out, then away for the week with work, starting to get desperate.
