Use big mullet or luderick(30-40cm), if you want big mulloway. Lures won’t get them. I don’t really chase them but I know a guy who targets the really big ones(30-40kg, 1.5 metres+) and thats what he uses. Fish at night around the tide changes, the deep hole, the pipeline, around the end of the south and north wall and the canyon all can yield a big jewie. As soon as I’m better I’ll be targeting the larger jewies on my overnight trips. 100lb mono traces, 8/0-10/0 hooks 50lb braid are all my recommendations. Be prepared for some long fishless nights though, he only gets a few around that size every winter.
If you just want some jewies around a metre, live pike, yellowtail or mullet around 15cm work fine. 50lb traces – 6/0-8/0 hooks.
Tide changes are super important, just as the tides starts to slow or speed up, bottom or top of the tide doesn’t matter. I don’t like the slack tide myself, but the time when they are slowing or speeding up is important. If you can match that with dawn or dusk then your odds of getting a good fish increase.
Lots of mullet in the seaway now so nows the time for those big jewies.
